FOMO (Fear of missing out) is the new social fear of missing out on an event, action or experience. This behavioral disorder has intensified over the last five years with the constant networking of the digital world and the overoffering and flooding of information. Thus, affected persons suffer from increased decision-making and concentration difficulties and are usually overloaded with the flood of information.
Emergence FOMO
But how do such FOMO fears arise? From scientific interviews with affected persons, one found out that the persons cannot make decisions any more, since the information overload overloads the judgement ability and increases the fear strongly in the moment of the decision. Since in the same time that one says “YES” to something, one simultaneously says “NO” to all other options. Thus, all other options are lost.
You can easily see this phenomenon in most friends on Facebook. So that they don’t miss anything, they don’t want to do just one thing, but everything at once. So you surely have an acquaintance from your circle of friends who is at every party, wants to be successful in business, continues his education, does sports every day, has a girlfriend, travels a lot – and all at the same time.
This phenomenon is also known in economics as bearing opportunity costs.
Symptoms FOMO

You can recognize FOMO by the following symptoms:
- Fear of missing an event, adventure or opportunity
- Being overwhelmed by decisions
- Fear of consequences of decisions
- Constant status update from social media Facebook/Instagram/Twitter friends.
- Concentration problems
- Getting distracted by status updates (while at work, school, or driving)
- Cell phone use while driving
- Constant contact with friends (Facebook & Whatsapp)
- Fear of empty battery (no longer reachable)
- Visiting Facebook every 5 minutes
Use FOMO Online
You can also use this insight for your business and create something that people can’t miss, be it an event, an offer, an adventure, an experience. A unique story, which is also advertised as such, usually helps here.

Donations to friends and organizations
Surely you have heard or read about the “Five Account Model”, in which it is explained how to distribute your income in percentages, so that you can optimally save for future investments. In addition to short-term and long-term investments, it also mentions that you should donate 5% of your income. This is also considered a more social investment and is used to support other people, such as friends starting a business or those in need.
Donate online
You can very well combine your “social streak” and your determination to do good for your environment with your project. You can continuously donate a certain percentage of your earnings from this project to a foundation and support others.
Search the web for foundations or charity organizations that appeal to you and contact them. You can showcase your fundraising efforts on your site and show visitors that a portion of your earnings will go to charity. This will make people more likely to buy from you, even though your competitors may have lower prices.
This way you support needy people and at the same time promote the project.
Special donations to friends and acquaintances
Especially with friends and acquaintances, who are usually not doing so well, it is difficult to offer money or a donation, because here usually the pride does not allow the acceptance of the donation. For example, you can build a website for a friend who is artistically talented, to present his works and give him the site as a gift. Or build a web store for a relative to sell his carvings.
Such “small projects” give the respective persons courage and hope again and maybe a successful story results from these small projects, which you can tell later on. However, for this you need to know the person and what he likes to do and what not.
In addition, you have another reference project and can prove your skills here. Maybe
